What a great mess of a movie! If you like your action with a little exploitation then check this out. Normally I give a quick synopsis of the story here but to be completely honest it’s not really all that interesting. So why am I reviewing this? Well as stupid as the story might be it frames some really good action sequences, fights, nice nudity, incestuous lusting(!), a really crazy chainsaw battle, and a scene where a guy catches a running saw blade in the crotch, ouch! As if that wasn’t enough Fred Williamson plays a pimp, so you know this is mandatory viewing.

Tomasina `Tommy’ Boyd is a really good-looking tomboy who works at an auto shop spending most her free time shooting hoops and working on her car. She is in love with a racecar driver who doesn’t notice her. She decides to enter a race against the man she loves so he will notice her and fall in love with her (?). At times completely silly and making little sense this movie is still well worth tracking down. Betsy Russell sheds her clothes enough times to make it worthwhile. The long out of print DVD release featured no extras except for a few trailers.

This is one of the weirder 80s Italian post nuke films. In 250 A.B. (after bomb) a group of motorcycle riding scavengers cruise into a ghost town where they find an abandon complex filled with food and fresh drinking water. The situation seems perfect until they realize they are not alone, the building is inhabited by mutant flesh eating rats. Once again cinema-master Bruno Mattei delivers the goods in this nice little movie, low on gore but heavy on hilarious dialog. In one particular un-politically correct scene the only black cast member of the film (named Chocolate!) pours white flower all over her head and proceeds to dance and sing “I’m white, I’m whiter then all of you”. The rats never look as menacing as there suppose to and at one point seem to be nothing more than toys on a conveyor belt! When watching this make sure you stick around to the end for the crazy twist ending.

When a senator’s daughter is kidnapped by Mexican terrorists (!?!) it’s up to her boyfriend and his group of friends to get her back, but the terrorist are ready for them and a bloody battle ensues. This movie doesn’t get much love on the internet. Checking out IMDB I came up with seven comments, all negative. I guess I’m the only person who likes this flick. It’s has all the makings of a good 80s action movie nudity, explosions, and gunfights. All the actors do a decent enough job with Linda Blair and Cameron Mitchell both playing small roles.

I just got a very sad email. It’s from Mark of Shocking Videos; in it he states he is closing down shop for good. Only reason given was “I’m tired, I’m worn out and it just isn’t fun anymore”. He goes on to state “And no, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke or some clever marketing ploy. I’m just… done”. If this is indeed true it’s a sad day for video collectors world wild.

I recorded this off the Action channel a few years back but just now got around to watching it. Keeping me company was my eight year old son Josh. I can’t help but think I have warped him a bit. He has seen the kind movies I watch and has taken a liking to them himself, smart enough to recognize the cheese and enjoy every bit of it. This was no more evident then last night when watched No Holds Barred.
Rip (Hogan) is the current WWF champion. An executive from a rival network named Brill wants him to wrestle for him. Rip refuses and Brill decides to find his own wrestler, that wrestler is 6’9″ tall Zeus. Brill sets up a championship fight called the “Battle of the Tough Guys”. Once again Rip refuses to cooperate by taking the match with Zeus. Zeus ruffs up Rip’s brother which prompts Rip to finally have a showdown with Zeus.
This piece of trash was obviously made to make a movie star of Hulk Hogan to bad the direction, script, and acting were atrocious. Although this film was intently tongue and cheek there were numerous scenes that were un-intently funny. Such as the numerous fight scenes that take place outside of the ring, these are nothing more than professional wrestling matches but shot totally serious as if it was a deadly martial art. They also try to sell Hulk Hogan as a sex symbol as he eventually seduces his female co-star. With a thin plot line, over acting, and some really funny set pieces this film has just the right amount of cheese to be entertaining.
Not surprising this has never had an official DVD release, and it probably never will. If you have to see it try ebay or amazon both have VHS copies for sale cheep.

An exploitation movie with a moral story(?), that’s what you get with The Hot Box. Four nurses working in the South American Jungle are kidnapped by gorilla forces and forced to teach the ‘Peoples Army’ important first aid techniques. The nurses are at first uncooperative but by the end of the movie are turned into Gun toting radicals. Although sold as a W.I.P. this is more of a jungle adventure.
Joe Viola directed this jungle/WIP film for Roger Corman, the story was written by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). Viola and Demme teamed up with Corman before for Angels Hard As They Come.

A leader of a motorcycle gang is executed by electric chair but not before proclaiming his innocents and vowing to come back from the dead. Soon after vacationing youth are being electrocuted by a mysterious killer on a motorcycle. Has the slain gang leader resin from the dead?
This is Umberto Lenzi’s entry into the 80s slasher cycle. What we get is a strange mash-up of a teen sex romp and horror, which ends up being a very restrained effort from Lenzi, his trademark gore and sleaze are sorely missed. The main actors do a decent enough job with John Saxon’s performance standing out. Although each murder gets more elaborate than the last curiously the gore is missing. Even though this doesn’t feel like an Umberto Lenzi film it’s still a decent waist of time. Recommended but only to Lenzi Completist.

After two white gangsters attack a black nurse a black militant group forms a self-defense organization called the “Peoples Army”. Soon there is conflict between the white gangsters and the Peoples Army. A bloody back and forth battle rages between the two groups. The Peoples Army eventually muscle the white gangsters out of town. With the Peoples Army victorious the situation soon spins out of control as absolute power corrupts absolutely.
This sleazy seventies time capsule should be mandatory blaxploitation viewing. There’s copious amounts of nudity, people dressed in nazi type uniforms, gratuitous violence, and ridiculous fights. An absolute classic! Warning: The N-word is dropped quite a few times in this so if your sensitive to that kind of thing, stay away.

Another 1970s movie set in the 50s. Five girls have a slumber party where they tell each other through flashbacks about their first sexual encounter. This grimy little sexploitation film is a favorite of mine. There are a few different dirty little vignettes on display here. The stories they tell are far from believable but that’s not a real concern with kind of movie. Well worth tracking down for Debra Winger’s celebrity skin shots.

Stephen King’s Creep Show

I scored this in the magazine section of a Safeway grocery store. I was just a kid and had to beg my mom for it. I had no idea who Stephen King, George Romero, or Berni Wrightson were and I definitely had no clue about EC Comics. It didn’t matter the cover was lurid and the pages inside looked scary.

Oriental Cinema, I loved that zine. I picked up issue #1 at a comic book store because it had Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Godzilla, and a beautiful Asian woman on the cover. I had read film-zines before but never one as crass as this. I loved it!
The editor and chief, Damon Foster had an opinionated writing style that was almost always hilarious to read. Commenting on much more than just cinema he managed to piss off quite a few people, reading the hate mail from issue to issue was much fun.

Oriental Cinema was my first exposure to modern day Hong Kong films. Up until that point all I had seen were badly dubbed old school chop sockey flicks. After reading reviews of some Jacky Chan films I took a chance and picked a few up at a comic book convention. I was absolutely delighted with what I saw. Crazy stunt work and nonstop action were the order of the day. It was the beginning of my love affair with Honk Kong movies that is still going today.

Oriental Cinema ran for a few more years after that but like so many other zines faded into oblivion.
